Control the watering of green areas
Water is most needed when it is most needed. Recurrent droughts have drawn attention to the importance of rationalizing the use of water, a vital yet limited resource.
Optimizing its use for watering the city’s green spaces can result in considerable savings (up to 50%) and preserve the resource while taking care of the vegetation, which is also vital for the well-being of the inhabitants.
How can we save water sustainably and efficiently without making any effort?
From the Slack channel set up by the city,
notifications are sent out when automatic watering is triggered,
based on weather data consulted in real time by the Agora platform,
Conversely, the agent can request soil moisture levels at any time.
Elements that must interact:
Communicating meters and sensors
Remote reading of physico-chemicals, pressure and flow velocity, reservoir levels…
Control systems
Pumping stations, water treatment, irrigation, plant supply…
Third-party information
Weather forecasts, pollution episodes, flood warnings…
Operations teams
Operators, maintenance department, customer relations…
Example: Optimizing watering of public gardens
Water only when necessary and at night to minimize evaporation and nuisance. How to do it?
Concerned about the good management of its water resources, but aware of the importance of the good condition of green spaces for the inhabitants, this municipality of the Ile-de-France region wanted to reason its watering strategy.
From a simple Office 365 (or Google) calendar, the head gardener defines the days, hours and duration of watering he needs. A dedicated scenario on the Agora solution is triggered every evening at 11 p.m.
and checks the soil moisture level (wireless sensors), analyzes the local rainfall predictions for the next few hours, and, when useful (soil too dry and no rain forecast), automatically triggers the watering system for the agreed duration. An activity report is then produced and communicated to the manager (SMS, MS Teams or WhatsApp…) who can easily check that the work has been done when he takes his shift the next morning.
The amount of water used is minimal and the vegetation remains healthy in all situations, without any agent having to work at night.
To go further...
From its withdrawal to its distribution, through filtration, decontamination and various treatments, water is subject to a large number of operations.
Water distribution faces many challenges. The frequency and length of droughts are increasing, increasing the risk of shortages in some regions. The quality of the water resource (micro-organisms, chemical substances…) must be rigorously controlled.
In Europe, the average leakage rate reaches considerable levels, ranging from 20% to 40% depending on the country. New services are needed to maximize the efficiency and quality of supply:
Information and alerts on water quality, works and cuts, floods…
Optimization of irrigation (e.g. according to anticipated rainfall, reservoir levels, etc.);
Interaction with customers, for example to modulate professional uses…

Which plan for your city?
Watering green spaces is an economic and ecological challenge. The approaches differ greatly from one territory to another. A multitude of technical solutions exist, it is necessary to be able to identify them, implement them and use them correctly…
