Helping vulnerable people stay at home

Staying in the familiar surroundings of one’s home and delaying entry into an EHPAD is the wish of most elderly or dependent people and their families. This is often possible, as long as the consequences of loss of autonomy are anticipated.

In France, nearly 450,000 people over the age of 65 fall at home each year. This is the leading cause of accidental death among seniors and a “simple” injury can have serious physical and psychological repercussions.

This is why the development of a digital personal assistance services sector is an important lever to meet these challenges.

Example: Taking care of an isolated person

The Intercommunal Social Action Center (CIAS) has created an assistance service to which its citizens with disabilities or over the age of 60 subscribe.

The objective is to secure the home maintenance of vulnerable people thanks to an alert process when a dangerous situation is suspected.

The ICAS had the necessary connected objects, but was unable to use the data provided in real time. In addition, although this mission is essential, the center was experiencing real problems with the availability of home care workers who were too busy.

With Agora, the ICAS has implemented a system of verification with the assisted persons, then escalation to their relatives before the assistance service is mobilized.

Single people indicate their preferred mode of communication: Messenger, WhatsApp or SMS, as well as the contact details of a relative to be contacted in case of emergency.

On the Agora platform, potentially risky situations are described: detection of a fall, CO2 concentration too high, no water consumption, heat wave episode…

Whatever the alert and its trigger, Agora sends a personalized message to the right person at the right time:

  • Are you okay?
  • Open the window in your living room,
  • Remember to hydrate (due to high heat)…

After 20 minutes with no response, a message is sent to the person to be notified in case of emergency: “We would like to check that your mother is okay. Please inform us as soon as you have information. If there is no response from you, we will mobilize the assistance service”.

Finally, if no response is received from the family member within a configurable period of time, a message specifying all the details necessary for an intervention is sent to the assistance service, indicating the causes of the presumed dangerous situation.

This process helps to create a link, to reassure the persons concerned and their relatives and finally to save precious time for the assistance service by eliminating a large number of unnecessary interventions.

To go further...

According to the Ministry of Health, there are 15 million people aged 60 and over today. They will be 20 million in 2030 and nearly 24 million in 2060. The number of people over 85 will increase from 1.4 million today to 5 million in 2060. Housing all seniors or dependent persons in specialized facilities is neither possible nor desirable.

Keeping a frail person at home facilitates social ties and is less expensive than accommodation in a medical facility. Nevertheless, it can be synonymous with a lot of vigilance or stress for an isolated person as well as for his relatives.

Agora Software’s ability is to combine data and natural language to ensure a safe, proactive and communicative home care.

The variety and multiplicity of data already available allows to secure home care. With Agora software, you collect data according to your needs:

  • Available without specific installation: weather forecasts or water, electricity, gas consumption…
  • That can be collected through simple and inexpensive sensors: CO2 rate, temperature, presence, movement, noise or fall detection devices, in order to anticipate or act in case of suspicion of a dangerous situation.

By correlating the data obtained, it is possible to accurately define worrying situations. Fortunately, most of the time it is a false alarm and for this reason communication is crucial.

To be able to exchange in real time with the person concerned, and if necessary, to alert a relative, or even an assistance service, makes it possible to react quickly in an appropriate way.

Agora Software makes it possible to do this in the language and through the channel chosen by each of these different users (messaging or social network for example).

Other cases of application to improve the life of citizens: facilitate the registration to leisure centers or nursery, report the removal of bulky or graffiti, manage the booking of appointments for civil status procedures, respond to requests for daily local information (on-call pharmacies, schedules of municipal structures, questions on elections, monitoring air quality …), disseminate and analyze a citizen consultation.
